Cerebral Tie-Dye India

Operation 136: How Much Can We Trust The Indian Media?

In March 2018, Cobrapost, an investigative journalism website, sent reporter Pushp Sharma, posing as a Hindu nationalist to India’s biggest media executives. He offered to pay them to publish pro-Hindutva and anti-Opposition news against Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati. 25 out of 27 newsrooms readily agreed for Rs. 500 crore, all of which Cobrapost caught on tape.

We’ve seen this before when senior editors from Zee News agreed to drop the Jindal accusation from the coal block allocation scam. We’ve seen it when Narottam Mishra won his Assembly seat in the 2008 Madhya Pradesh elections.

This is not news, this is putting a price-tag on conditioning people to think, behave, invest and vote in a certain way.
