Amit Masurkar’s film Newton stars Rajkumar Rao who plays ‘Newton’ Kumar, a Government clerk on polling duty in a Naxal-controlled town (probably in Chhattisgarh). The movie is spot on when it denotes how elections are run in India – from how the Indian Army and security forces wield their authority in the area, in terms of governance and administration to how tribals practice self-government because they have lost faith in India’s political system.
Such a genius is a rare sight for Indians. But at least we’re moving ahead. Our movies are depicting more than just the sanskarisation of society – a feat that 90s Bollywood had very well achieved.
