As early as the 1930s, science fiction writers and inventors were dreaming of an environment where you could escape from reality via machines – the beauty of virtual and augmented reality.
One of the major areas where VR is used is the entertainment sector – especially video games. Shopping malls are using this technology to make the advertisements look more visually appealing. Other areas include architecture, films, TV, travel and sports.
Augmented reality on the other hand, instead of replacing reality, adds cues onto the already real world through computer graphics, where the human mind cannot tell the difference between computer-generated images and the real world. The two major areas where AR is applied is education and gaming. Other industries that use AR widely are medical institutions, archaeology, commerce, and now even restaurants.
